The Benefits of a Gap Year

Digging into Data

Veterans of the gap year industry have long known the benefits of gap time and experiential education. Time and time again, they have seen firsthand the impressive growth and learning that can happen during a well-planned gap year.

Thankfully, these days there is more and more quantitative data that helps back up the anecdotal experiences.

Based on the most recent Gap Year Alumni Survey, gap year students reported:

  • 98% of gap year students reported increased maturity

  • 97% of gap year students reported improved self-confidence

  • 84% of gap year students reported increased academic motivation

  • 82% of participants reported their gap year experience gave them a competitive advantage when applying to college and/or jobs

Additionally, data from the Gap Year Research Consortium at Colorado College has shown that gap year students outperformed their peers in GPAs.

A well-planned gap year helps students grow and mature in ways that ripple out into their academic, social, and professional lives for years to come.
